Chromium Trioxide Sputtering
Target Description
Chromium is a chemical element originating from the Greek ‘chroma’, meaning color. It was used before 1 AD and discovered by the Terracotta Army. “Cr” is the canonical chemical symbol of chromium. Its atomic number in the periodic table of elements is 24, located at Period 4 and Group 6, belonging to the d-block. The relative atomic mass of chromium is 51.9961(6) Dalton, the number in the brackets indicating the uncertainty.
It is widely used in the automobile industry to form a shiny coating on wheels and bumpers. Chromium is used in many vacuum applications such as automotive glass coatings, photovoltaic cell fabrication, battery fabrication, and decorative and corrosion-resistant coatings.

Chromium Trioxide Sputtering Target Applications
- Thin-Film Coatings: Chromium trioxide sputtering targets are used to deposit thin films of chromium oxide on various substrates, providing excellent corrosion resistance and thermal stability. This is valuable for protecting electronic components and optical lenses.
- Optical Coatings: Chromium oxide films are used in optical applications, including anti-reflective coatings on lenses and optical components. They enhance light transmission and reduce glare.
- Decorative Coatings: Chromium oxide coatings are applied in the automotive, jewelry, and architectural industries to create attractive and durable finishes that resist abrasion and environmental factors.
- Solar Panels: These sputtering targets improve solar panel efficiency by reducing reflection and enhancing light absorption, contributing to better energy conversion.
- Gas Sensors: Chromium oxide films act as gas-sensitive layers in sensors, making them valuable for gas detection and environmental monitoring.
- Electrochromic Devices: Used in smart windows and mirrors, these coatings can change their transparency in response to electrical voltage, providing glare reduction and privacy control.
